Inside the engine of your Volkswagen, numerous tiny pieces interact in intricate ways. The parts rubbing together creates friction and heat. That’s where engine oil comes in, lubricating the components. With fresh and sufficient oil, the engine parts wear down less and maintain a suitable temperature.

Over time, bits of debris accumulate in the oil and some of its chemicals deteriorate. Oil may burn away as well, especially as the engine ages. To keep the engine running smoothly, drivers routinely replenish the engine oil and its filter.

Exceptions to the Oil Change Rules

All rules have exceptions, right? It’s advisable to check your owner’s manual and see what it specifically recommends. In addition, certain driving habits increase the need for oil changes.

Some activities put more demand on the engine than average driving. This includes cars that spend a lot of time towing trailers or idling. Regularly driving in very hot or cold environments also qualifies.

While this may sound surprising, additional oil changes are associated with short-distance driving. Are most of your vehicle’s trips less than five miles? Engines needs more time to reach their full operating temperature.

If any of these situations sound familiar, change your oil every 7,500 miles or at least every nine months. Vehicles with a model year before 2009 should consider an oil change every 3,000 miles.
