Am I Eligible for a Colorado EV Tax Credit?

After recently purchasing an EV, you may be wondering – “am I eligible for a Colorado EV tax credit?” Accordingly, our team has laid out the requirements that need to be met in order for you to qualify for a credit.

In short, if you have leased, purchased, or converted any vehicle to electric fuel, you do qualify. There are, however, some more strict requirements in place that you will want to pay attention to. These requirements are listed below.

  • For the purchase of vehicles and leases, the vehicle must be new and cannot have been registered in a previous jurisdiction.
  • Motor vehicle must be titled and registered in CO.
  • Motor vehicle must have a maximum speed of at least 55 MPH.
  • Motor vehicle must be propelled by a significant extent by an electric motor.
  • Motor vehicle’s battery must have a capacity of at least 4 kWh.
  • Motor vehicle’s battery must be capable of being recharged by an external power source.

For most EVs you won’t have to worry about these requirements as most come having met them all. Though, they are still good to keep in mind.

What Tax Credit Can I Claim?

So, with a qualifying EV, what tax credit(s) can you claim? Well, in Colorado, there are two credits available. For the purchase of a new EV, you can claim a $2,000 credit. For a new lease, you can claim a $1,500 credit.

These credits are different than the federal tax credits, which you may also be eligible to claim.

How Can I File for the Colorado EV Tax Credit?

In order to file for the Colorado EV tax credit, you will need to file a Colorado income tax return with all required forms and documentation. This claim must be made in the same tax year that the purchase, lease, or conversion was made.
